Our favourite Ski Resorts in Switzerland

Our favourit  Ski Resorts in Switzerland

Switzerland offers some of the most varied terrain and picturesque peaks in the world - as well as access to some of the most popular ski resorts. The team at Steiger & Cie is made up of experienced skiers and Swiss natives, and we’ve pooled our knowledge to narrow down our three best ski resorts in Switzerland, chosen from a list of hundreds. Read on to enjoy our personal recommendations and tips, and decide which resort is right for you.

Zermatt

The most popular ski resort in Switzerland has gained its fame for good reason. The car-free village of Zermatt is a beautiful alpine wonderland fit for a Christmas card, and is home to the iconic Matterhorn.

Why does Zermatt make the list?

Zermatt is fantastic because it can cater to advanced and intermediate skiers, and has plenty to keep non-skiing holidaymakers entertained. For the truly advanced and adventurous there’s a vertical of 2,200m, and some incredible off-piste terrain to be explored. You can also ski from Zermatt to Cervinia in Italy, for even more high-altitude fun.

Away from the slopes, the après ski scene is just as impressive, with a wide range of lounges, bars and restaurants to choose from. Music lovers might want to time their visit to coincide with the Unplugged , which happens annually in September. The wellness scene is also particularly luxurious, and visiting one of the many spas is the perfect way to close out a day on the mountains. If we’ve whetted your appetite for Zermatt already, you might find that this fact seals the deal; Zermatt is home to no less than 11 Michelin star restaurants.

Verbier

Prestigious, fashionable, surrounded by dramatic scenery and only a 2-hour commute from Geneva, Verbier is a high-altitude haven for weekend trippers and week-long vacationers alike.

Why does Verbier make the list?

If you’re an advanced skier who enjoys freeride terrain and backcountry skiing then Verbier will provide an irresistible challenge. Verbier is home to the largest ski area in all of Switzerland, with 410km of slopes. While the skiing here is definitely aimed at the advanced, there are good facilities for learners and children, and a variety of other snowsports to be enjoyed if the slopes aren’t calling to you. Verbier is also the best way to access Les 4 Vallées, for even more skiing opportunities.

If you still have energy left at the end of the day you can be sure Verbier’s nightlife will provide ample opportunities, with some venues open as late as 4am. If the pubs and bars don’t take your fancy you can catch an ice hockey match in town, or try your hand at dog-sledding.

Crans-Montana

Located on a sunny and south-facing plateau, the twin towns of Crans-Montana make up the perfect family ski resort thanks to its wide variety of trails and idyllic resort features.

Why does Crans-Montana make the list?

If you’re looking for skiing that can be engaging without being taxing, Crans-Montana offers you just the right level of entertainment. There are also excellent snowboarding facilities here, and some of the best all-inclusive accommodation. In light of the sunshine, the lower slopes are covered by snow guns, so you don’t need to worry about the snow cover as you take in the stunning views.

When the weather is right you can enjoy golf, horseback riding, and fishing in this year-round resort. In terms of après ski activities, the Crans-Montana scene is on the more sophisticated side (not that late-night DJ sets can’t be found if you want one), with much of the town being pleasantly walkable with a wide range of dining options on offer.
